The Essential Role of Animals in Permaculture at Trigon Farm

At Trigon Farm in Devon, animals are at the heart of our regenerative farming approach. In permaculture, animals play an essential role — there’s no replacement for these living, breathing parts of the ecosystem. They are not just residents of the farm; they’re active partners in building soil health, promoting biodiversity, and creating a sustainable future.
Each species contributes something unique. Our chickens, ducks, quails, sheep, and goats help maintain a balanced, productive environment. They transform grass and plants into valuable protein — milk, eggs, and meat — while naturally managing the land. This reduces the need for mowing (and therefore fuel use) and removes the reliance on harmful chemical pesticides or herbicides.
Regenerative Farming in Action: Rotational Grazing
A key part of our sustainable farming practices is rotational grazing. Our sheep graze one section of pasture at a time, eating the grass and fertilising the soil with their manure as they go. Then, they move on — giving each area a rest period of at least six weeks before returning.
This natural rhythm prevents overgrazing, restores soil structure, and reduces the risk of worm infestations without chemicals. It’s a simple but powerful example of regenerative agriculture — working with nature to improve the land, rather than depleting it.
Goats: Natural Hedge Managers and Biodiversity Champions
Our Royal Golden Guernsey goats are browsers by nature. Instead of grazing open fields, they prefer to nibble on the hedgerows and trees around the farm. This helps keep our hedge lines healthy and diverse, supporting a wide range of insects, birds, and small mammals.
They’re also a joy to watch — their curious, playful energy brings life to the farm. Beyond their charm, they embody one of the key principles of permaculture: every element has multiple functions. Our goats control vegetation, improve biodiversity, and bring people closer to the natural cycles that sustain life.

A Hands-On Connection to Nature
In the summer, we open our petting area, giving visitors a chance to experience this ecosystem up close. You can walk the goats, meet the sheep, and spend time with our friendly chickens and ducks.
These encounters are more than just fun — they’re educational. Visitors get to see first-hand how animals, plants, and people work together in harmony. It’s an inspiring, hands-on way to learn about sustainable agriculture, regenerative design, and how small actions can lead to lasting environmental change.
Why Animals Matter in Sustainable Agriculture
Animals are an irreplaceable part of the permaculture ecosystem. They support natural cycles of fertility, pest control, and regeneration — processes that machines or chemicals could never truly replicate. At Trigon Farm, we believe in honouring that relationship and helping others rediscover how connected we all are to the living world around us.
